Sony WF-1000XM6: what to expect from the next generation of premium earbuds?
Sony is widely recognized for making some of the best true wireless earbuds on the market, and the WF-1000XM line is proof of that. These models stand out for their industry-leading noise cancellation, excellent sound quality, and an extremely robust companion app. Even nearly three years after their launch, the Sony WF-1000XM5 still rank among the best premium earbuds available today.
However, new leaks suggest that the WF-1000XM6 may be closer than we think — which raises an important question: is it worth waiting?
Strong competition at much lower prices
Nowadays, there’s no shortage of earbuds with active noise cancellation (ANC) that deliver advanced features at far more affordable prices. A good example is the Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC, which costs around US$99.99 and offers IPX4 certification, high-quality Bluetooth codecs, excellent ANC, and up to 10 hours of battery life.
In this context, the US$299 price tag of the Sony WF-1000XM5 may deter many consumers. While Sony’s earbuds deliver more powerful noise cancellation and more refined sound, it’s understandable to hesitate when there are alternatives costing a third of the price. Ideally, the WF-1000XM6 would launch with a more aggressive price — although that seems unlikely.
Sound quality: excellent, but with caveats
The perception of “good sound” varies widely from person to person. While bass lovers and athletes often prefer emphasized low frequencies, audiophiles usually look for a more balanced and natural response.
The WF-1000XM5 please most users thanks to their solid tuning and well-defined stereo imaging. However, they feature an excessive emphasis on bass and sub-bass below 300 Hz, which can mask vocals and instruments such as guitars and synthesizers. This sound signature can also become fatiguing during longer listening sessions. For the WF-1000XM6, a more balanced sound profile would be very welcome.
Design: a step backward?
Another criticism of the WF-1000XM5 concerns their finish. The earbuds feature a glossy surface that feels less premium than the previous model. In addition to being slippery, they easily collect fingerprints and dirt.
Interestingly, the charging case has a matte finish that is far more pleasant to the touch. For the next generation, Sony should return to a fully matte design, once again raising the aesthetic standard of the lineup.
Limited durability for workouts
In a competitive market, many of the best sports earbuds offer more robust IP certifications. The WF-1000XM5 are rated only IPX4, which protects against water splashes but not against dust.
This becomes even more noticeable when compared to rivals like the AirPods Pro 3, which feature an IP57 rating, ensuring protection against both water and dust. For the WF-1000XM6, an upgrade in this area is almost mandatory.
Connectivity: limited broader compatibility
The WF-1000XM5 support SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LE Audio, which looks great on paper. However, LDAC doesn’t always perform optimally at the lower bitrates often used by Android smartphones. In these situations, codecs like aptX can deliver better results.
If Sony adds support for aptX Adaptive or aptX Lossless to the WF-1000XM6, compatibility and performance with Android devices would improve significantly.
Launch date and possible price
According to well-known leaker billbil-kun from Dealabs, the Sony WF-1000XM6 is expected to be officially announced on February 12, 2026, in black and silver. The estimated U.S. price is US$329.99, roughly a 10% increase over the XM5. Interestingly, in Europe the price is expected to drop to €299.99.
Considering that Sony usually updates this line every two years, the delay reinforces expectations that the launch will indeed happen in the first quarter of 2026.
Is it worth waiting for the WF-1000XM6?
The Sony WF-1000XM5 remain excellent earbuds, with great comfort, advanced features, and one of the best apps on the market. Still, with the WF-1000XM6 seemingly so close, waiting may be a smart move for those who want the latest technology.
On the other hand, iPhone users may find a more seamless experience with the AirPods Pro 3, while those prioritizing sound quality and advanced codecs should consider the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4. Meanwhile, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds are ideal for users who want extremely powerful ANC and Snapdragon Sound support, despite their high price.
